Why Unemployment Numbers Helped Push Me to Start XT Systems Delivery
By Chezre Fredericks
There are many reasons people start businesses.
Some want independence.
Some want to pursue an idea.
Some want to create wealth.
For me, one of the biggest drivers was something more serious: unemployment.
South Africa continues to face one of the highest unemployment rates in the world.
In recent years, official unemployment has remained above 30%, while expanded unemployment has often exceeded 40%.
Youth unemployment has been even higher.
These are not just statistics.
They represent real people, real families, and real potential waiting for opportunity.
At some point, I realised I could spend years discussing the problem, or I could try build something that contributes in a small but meaningful way.
That became part of the motivation behind starting XT Systems Delivery.
What I Saw Inside Businesses
Before starting my own company, I spent years working inside organisations where operations, sales, systems, and people all had to work together.
I noticed a common pattern:
Many businesses are working hard, but not always working clearly.
They have:
- Good people
- Strong intentions
- Valuable products
- Busy teams
But often lack:
- Clear metrics
- Consistent processes
- Useful scorecards
- Reliable data for decisions
Without those things, effort gets wasted.
Teams become reactive.
Leaders make decisions on instinct alone.
Growth becomes harder than it needs to be.
That is where I saw an opportunity.
How Data Changed My Thinking
One of the clearest lessons in my own career came through using data practically.
I was involved in a business area where sales had been declining for nearly a decade.
Instead of guessing, we looked at the numbers.
We studied:
- Which products customers actually wanted
- Which offerings had become low-value distractions
- Where margin was strongest
- Where effort was being wasted
The result was simple but powerful:
We focused on what the market valued and reduced attention on what it didn't.
That kind of clarity can change direction quickly.
It reinforced something I strongly believe today:
Good data is not about reports. Good data is about better decisions.
Why XT Systems Delivery Exists
XT Systems Delivery was built around a simple idea:
Many small and medium-sized businesses cannot afford full-time analysts, process specialists, and systems consultants.
But they still need those capabilities.
So we aim to help businesses use the assets they already have:
- Their operational data
- Their customer information
- Their workflows
- Their team knowledge
Then turn those into practical improvements.
Where EOS Comes In
One framework that strongly resonates with me is Traction and the EOS (Entrepreneurial Operating System) model.
EOS highlights that businesses need more than effort.
They need a system.
Data is one part of that system.
But data only creates value when connected to the other parts, especially process.
Because once numbers reveal a problem or opportunity, process is what fixes it.
Examples:
- If sales conversion is weak, improve the sales process
- If delivery is inconsistent, improve the operating process
- If meetings waste time, improve communication rhythms
- If customer retention drops, improve service follow-up process
This is where many businesses stop too early.
They gather metrics, but never redesign the workflow.
My Next Focus: Process
This article begins a new direction in my content.
I've written often about data, metrics, and decision-making.
Now I want to focus on the next logical step:
Process.
Because data tells you what is happening.
Process determines what happens next.
In the coming articles, I'll explore:
- How to map broken workflows
- How SMEs can simplify operations
- How repeatable processes create profit
- How systems reduce dependence on key individuals
- How better process creates a business that can scale or sell
Final Thought
South Africa needs more businesses that work well, grow sustainably, and create jobs.
That won't happen through motivation alone.
It happens when founders build organisations with clarity, discipline, numbers, and repeatable systems.
That is the journey I'm on with XT Systems Delivery.
And this next chapter is about helping others do the same.
Work With XT Systems Delivery
If your business feels busy but not efficient, the issue may not be effort. It may be process.
